The backlash to Meghan Markle’s social media post near the site of Princess Diana’s death is the latest event to overshadow Prince Harry’s attempts to reconcile with his family.
Meghan, 44, filmed her view of the city from the backseat of her car and her stilettos just after attending the Balenciaga fashion show on Saturday October 4. Her footage included the Pont de l’Alma bridge, which leads to the Pont de l’Alma tunnel, the site of the car crash that killed Diana, her partner Dodi Fayed and chauffeur Henri Paul in August 1997.
Harry has been trying hard to repair his relationship with King Charles, 76, and he had his first face-to-face meeting with his father last month. “I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point continuing to fight any more, life is precious,” he said in an interview in May.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams analysed the Paris situation as a genuine mistake on Meghan’s part, but imagines the clip and the fallout that followed likely hasn’t gone down well both at Buckingham Palace and in California, where the couple live and where Harry currently remains with their two children.
“I suspect Harry will be horrified and extremely angry, because the video links to the most traumatic period of his life,” he told OK!. “He would be aghast, because even though it wasn’t intentional, it was a very bad mistake.
“Meghan simply cannot afford to behave like that, because of who she is and the fact she has made herself into a brand. Her airily filming part of Paris, while it wasn’t intended to offend anybody and was clearly a mistake, was grossly insensitive, and these mistakes hold weight.”
Jennie Bond, the BBC’s former royal correspondent, said: “She could have thought about it harder, but, like so many people these days, it’s all about sharing your life instantly without considering the implications.”
Meghan was in Paris to support her friend, Balenciaga’s new creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli. She was photographed being greeted by Vogue’s Dame Anna Wintour – a sign that the fashion world accepts her.
