Sir Rod Stewart was no party animal back in the day – and was always tucked up in bed nice and early.
The 80-year-old singer, best known for songs Hot Legs, Baby Jane, and Tonight’s the Night, did his first ever boozy ‘all nighter’ just a few days after turning 40.
Sir Rod, known as Rod the Mod, was partying at the first ever Rock in Rio festival, which took place from January 11 until January 20 in 1985.
The singer had only just turned 40 the day before the festival – attended by more than 1.3m fans – began, on January 10.
Rod was among the headliners at the show, which also included Queen, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake and The Go-Gos.
One of the members of the Go-Gos, Belinda Carlisle, said she and her band dragged Sir Rod out on a bender even thought he was performing the following day.
Speaking about the Brazilian festival, singer Belinda Carlisle – who was in her 20s at the time – said she loved ‘hanging out’ with Sir Rod.
She said that he confessed to her that he’d never ‘stayed up all night’ before, despite his rock and roll credentials.
The former Go-Gos singer, who had a huge solo hit with Heaven is a Place on Earth in 1987, said: “At the very first Rock in Rio festival, we ended up hanging out with Rod Stewart all night.
“He was freaking out because he had never been up all night.”
Belinda also revealed how Sir Rod invited The Go-Gos to his gig – later the same day of their ‘all nighter’ – and that they were more hungover than he was.
She said: “He (Rod) sat us on the side of the stage, so he could see us and know we felt way worse than he did.”
