Maccabi Tel Aviv’s derby match against Hapoel Tel Aviv has been cancelled over police concerns as their away supporters’ ban at Aston Villa hangs in the balance

Maccabi Tel Aviv have seen their derby match against Hapoel Tel Aviv cancelled amid their Aston Villa ban.

The Tel Aviv derby between Maccabi and Hapoel was scheduled to be played on Sunday night at Bloomfield Stadium, but it was postponed after police concerns.

Before kick-off, police deemed conditions at the stadium unsafe to continue after extensive use of pyrotechnics from fans which led to police officers and supporters sustaining injuries.

According to Israeli Police, three officers and five fans were hurt during the incidents.

A police statement read: “This was not a football game, but a case of serious disorder and violence.

“As a result, Israel Police has informed the clubs and match officials that the game cannot take place.”

The Israel Professional Football Leagues Association later confirmed 20 minutes after the scheduled 8:30pm start time that the match would not go ahead on police instructions, with the stadium remaining covered in smoke.
