Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday afternoon to earn their first win at the ground since January 2016, but Roy Keane has urged caution despite Ruben Amorim’s greatest result to date

Roy Keane has dismissed the idea that Manchester United are back on track following their impressive 2-1 victory over Liverpool on Sunday.

United, thanks to goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire, secured their first win at Anfield since January 2016 under Louis van Gaal. The triumph also marked the first time Ruben Amorim’s side have secured consecutive Premier League victories, having defeated Sunderland before the international break.

The Old Trafford outfit will be hoping this long-awaited victory over their arch-rivals sparks a resurgence under Amorim, who has been under immense scrutiny this season. The win propels them to ninth in the league, just two points shy of fourth-placed Liverpool, who have now lost four games in a row.

However, former United captain Keane has cautioned against jumping to conclusions about his former team’s resurgence. United’s next match is against Brighton and Hove Albion, who have a good record at Old Trafford.

“I wouldn’t go as far as to say Man Utd are back but it’s a huge win for them,” he told Sky Sports.

“We’ve all been critical of this group of players over the last year but on today’s performance, they showed grit. They stuck at it and you felt they had goals in them.

“It’s a big moment for these players and they should enjoy it. But now they have to kick on.”

Meanwhile, Jamie Redknapp, former Liverpool midfielder, has lauded Amorim for his tactical decisions during the Merseyside victory.

“Time will tell if Man Utd can kick on but this feels like a huge win for the manager,” he said.

“He got every call right. I questioned whether Maguire was the right man to play but he showed his leadership skills. Cunha over Sesko was the right call as well.

“They also got it right tactically. they never played out from the back once. they got it spot on. Amorim has been battered by everyone but he will feel good after that, but a breakthrough moment? Only time will tell.”
