Morgan Rogers was on the scoresheet for England in their 3-0 win over Wales and the Aston Villa star delivered a confident warning to his Three Lions team-mates post-match
Morgan Rogers has labelled his goal for England as a “dream come true”, following his successful strike in the Three Lions’ 3-0 victory over Wales. The Aston Villa ace was given another starting opportunity by Thomas Tuchel, as a reward for his stellar performance against Serbia last month.
Just three minutes into the international friendly, Rogers broke the deadlock with a clever close-range finish, after Marc Guehi skilfully kept the ball in play.
His club mate Ollie Watkins quickly doubled the lead from just a few yards out, thanks to Rogers’ excellent cross into the box. The scoring spree of Villa players continued as Ezri Konsa set up Bukayo Saka, who curled in a fantastic shot from the edge of the box.
Despite such a remarkable first half, Tuchel didn’t hold back in criticising the atmosphere inside the national team stadium post-match.
In an interview with ITV Sport, he stated: “We had one and a half training days to prepare against a well-trained team and we did very well. We could have been 5-0 up at half-time.”, reports the Mirror.
“We couldn’t score the fourth and fifth ones. The stadium was silent. We didn’t get any energy back from the stands. We did everything to win.”
When asked if he expected more from the fans, Tuchel responded: “Yes. What more can you give in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them escape. If you hear just Wales fans for half an hour, it’s sad because the team deserved more support today.”
With Watkins substituted at the interval after seemingly sustaining a knock, Rogers and Saka spoke to the media post-match, with the former delivering an ecstatic assessment.
“Right at the top,” he declared to ITV when questioned about where netting for England sits amongst his career highlights. “It’s a proud moment to do it at home too in a home nation derby. A dream come true.
“The quality of players we have with people here and not here, you can never be too comfortable, or else people will take your role.”
Rogers faces fierce competition for his spot, with recent knocks to Cole Palmer and Jude Bellingham likely contributing to his substantial playing time. To maintain his position ahead of that pair, Rogers must elevate his domestic performances.
Following Villa’s challenging campaign start, Rogers had managed zero goal contributions before their 3-1 triumph over Fulham, where he somewhat fortuitously set up Emiliano Buandia’s strike. A week later, his delivery to Donyell Malen was far more deliberate and expertly converted.
Rogers’ England strike marked his maiden goal of the season, and he’ll be eager to maintain this momentum when England face Latvia in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier.
