BAE Systems will next year recruit more than 2,000 apprentices and graduates in a boost for the beleaguered youth jobs market.

The intake adds to the 10,000 young people that the FTSE 100 defence group has hired over the past five years as demand ramps up amid growing global tensions.

BAE is recruiting a mix of graduates, apprentices and degree apprentices – who are on the payroll while studying for a degree. There are already more than 6,800 youngsters in such training roles across its UK operations.

Richard Hamer, BAE’s education and skills director, said applications could hit new highs – partly thanks to ‘the enthusiasm from mums and dads’ for apprenticeships over traditional degrees.

‘You earn while you learn – there’s no debt – with graduates now it’s something like £50,000 they typically leave with,’ he said.

‘They don’t have to look for a job again – you’ve got a job at the start.’
