Former professional footballer Karen Carney is one of the 10 celebrities taking part in this year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing

Following the launch of Strictly Come Dancing, Karen Carney joined Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch to chat about her participation in the legendary BBC programme.

The former professional footballer joined hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer on Sunday (September 21), confessing that she found it difficult to watch the pre-recorded Strictly launch show the previous night.

“It’s so mesmerising, even just sat there watching it. I couldn’t believe I’m in it, and I couldn’t believe that was last night,” Karen shared with Simon and Tim.

“I watched the show, but I watched my bit with my hands over my head [sic] a little bit. I was like, ‘I can’t believe I’m in it’. It’s so good,” she continued.

Tim probed Karen about whether her sports background has made her excessively competitive, with the ex-footballer admitting that she isn’t necessarily focused on winning Strictly as she simply wants to “enjoy” it, reports Wales Online.

She elaborated: “I think, because I know what I know from sport, I actually don’t want to be like that. When I was playing it was about winning and being the best.”

Karen further added: “I genuinely don’t, I haven’t got the energy for that. I love the show, I want to learn something new and I want to enjoy it. I think, from sport and football, that was maybe taken away a little bit.”

Karen is competing on Strictly against a host of celebrities including Dani Dyer, Vicky Pattison, Thomas Skinner, Lewis Cope, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Ross King, George Clarke and Balvinder Sopal.

She’s been paired with Strictly professional dancer Carlos Gu, and she’s buzzing about their partnership.

“This is so surreal and can’t believe I finally get to say this but I have my @bbcstrictly partner!” Karen excitedly posted on Instagram after the launch show was broadcast.

“So happy that I get to do this alongside @gkx_carlos.”

She continued: “Hope you all enjoyed the launch show as much as we did and can’t wait for our first dance together as a couple next weekend!”.

The inaugural Strictly Come Dancing live show will be broadcast on Saturday, 26 September, marking the debut performance of this year’s contestants on the dance floor.

Strictly Come Dancing airs on Saturdays on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Sunday Brunch airs every Sunday on Channel 4 at 10am.
