BBC One’s The Wheel saw host Michael McIntyre interrupt the game show to share some ‘bad news’

Michael McIntyre brought popular BBC game show The Wheel to a halt to deliver some ‘bad news’ during tonight’s episode.

Friday’s instalment (November 22) of the smash-hit programme featured celebrity experts Clare Balding, Zoe Ball, Bill Bailey, Lou Sanders, Konnie Huq, Tommy Fury, Sam Thompson and Pete Wicks.

First up was Luke from Southampton, who was hoping to bag as much money as he could. At the beginning of the BBC show, Luke revealed to presenter Michael that he was desperate to win big so he could put the money towards establishing and providing for his family.

He also expressed his desire to donate a portion to Kidney Care UK for personal reasons. Luke, who works as a pharmacy delivery driver, explained that he can’t take on too much work due to home dialysis treatment, reports the Mirror.

Revealing that his kidneys had “stopped working”, the determined contestant explained: “Through no fault of my own when I was around 27 I got diagnosed and I started dialysis at the age of 30 so I’ve been doing it for seven plus years now.

“So at home, five times a week, three and a half hours on the machine.”

Presenter Michael responded: “We’re all now fully motivated.”

His opening question focused on musical instruments, with celebrity expert Bill Bailey lighting up in gold as the specialist in that category, whilst Tommy Fury was ‘locked out’.

The question was: “According to a 2024 YouGov survey, which musical instrument do the most Brits claim they can play?”

The options featured piano, recorder, violin and saxophone. With piano being the correct answer – which Luke got right, bagging him £3,000 – only Tommy Fury amongst the celebrity panel also provided the right response.

But host Michael quickly dampened the mood as he revealed: “Oh I’m sorry, we do have some bad news though.”

He continued: “It looks like Bill also went for recorder which means that you got that wrong and if an expert gets their question wrong, they’re shut down for the next spin.”

Viewers flocked to X within minutes to share their thoughts, with one posting: “If you told me before this episode started that Bill Bailey would get his question in musical instruments wrong, I wouldn’t believe you. He’s a proper expert.”

Following Bill’s subsequent incorrect answer, another viewer commented: “Bill Bailey having an uncharacteristically bad night tonight? He’s usually the cleverest person in a TV Show but tonight thought there’s a bear called Tony! Next he’ll be saying there’s a tiger called Winnie.”

Despite his brilliant beginning, Luke stumbled on a Glastonbury question, resulting in his elimination from The Wheel.

Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel airs on BBC One on Saturdays at 8:05pm
