The victim was sitting with a group at a drinking spot in Tema, southern Ghana, when six young men arrived on motorbikes and one of them snatched his phone before tragedy struck

A 68-year-old British man was gunned down during a robbery in southern Ghana, local police have confirmed. The incident happened on Friday, November 7 at a drinking establishment opposite the Community Nine cemetery in Tema, roughly 15 miles east of the capital. The victim was rushed to Tema General Hospital but was declared dead shortly afterwards.

Officers from the Tema Regional Police Commander revealed that the victim was seated with a group when six young men arrived on motorbikes, with one of them grabbing his phone, Modern Ghana reports.

A statement read: “Two of the assailants approached the group, and one of them snatched the victim’s mobile phone from the table. When the victim attempted to retrieve his phone, one of the suspects shot, and the gang fled the scene on their motorbikes.

“The Tema Regional Police Command has launched a full-scale operation to track down the perpetrators.”

A 9mm spent shell was recovered from the scene and has been processed for evidence, the statement added, reports the Mirror.

Police said witnesses have been interviewed and efforts are underway to contact the British High Commission to inform them of the death of a British national.

The Foreign Office has been contacted for comment.
