If you’re one of the two-thirds of Brits who rank Jelly Babies as their favourite sweet treat, you could be in for a surprise… Each of the six types has its special name!
As we get near Christmas, you’re likely to soon enjoy one of the country’s best-loved sweets. But Jelly Babies don’t just come in different colours but with different names too.
The confectionery is close to the hearts of Brits as a retro classic. Almost two thirds of us voted for them as our favourite in a survey last year.
Jelly Babies topped the list with 65%, followed by Fruit Pastilles and Fruit Gums. The study found that 78% of us love to travel back to our childhood with a sweet treat.
Jonathan Horsley of Perspectus Global said: “Sweets are one of life’s simple pleasures. You can see how they provoke feelings of nostalgia.”
But Jelly Babies have a hidden feature you might have never guessed. Moreover, each of the six different sweeties has its own special name.
Richard Price, British Grocery expert at BritSuperstore.co.uk, said: ”Whilst every Brit undoubtedly has a favourite flavour or often colour few British consumers or expats realise they actually have a name. As part of their rebrand in 1953, Bassetts gave each colour a distinct shape and name.”
Here are the Jelly Baby names:
- Brilliant – Red
- Bubbles – Yellow
- Baby Bonny – Pink
- Boofuls – Green
- Big Heart – Purple
- Bumper – Orange
Nevertheless, Jelly Babies aren’t the only sweet that puzzles Brits with its name, reports the Sun. Joe Lewis recently took to his TikTok page to reveal that he’d been calling Blue Riband bars by the wrong name for years.
He only spotted his mistake after ordering a big box from Amazon. “So please tell me I’m not the only person that’s ever noticed this?” he began.
The TikToker continued: “I’ve just got this big box of biscuits – 71 of them. Toffee Crisps, Yorkies, Kit Kats… and Blue Ribands.
“Blue Riband? I am 100% sure that it’s always been Blue Ribbon!”
People quickly commented that they’d made the same mistake. “Definitely always been blue ribbon,” one wrote.
“Blue ribbon 100%,” said another. Jelly Babies were invented 160 years ago back in 1864.
Historians reckon the very first was the made by an Austrian confectioner working for Fryers of Lancashire. The story goes that he was asked to make a mould for Jelly Bears.
But the sweets came out looking more like newborn infants so got the name baby instead. The treats were later relaunched as “Peace Babies” after the First World War.
