Shocking footage has captured the terrifying moment a ceiling came crashing down on diners at a restaurant in Gloucester. Customers at Brockworth’s Toby Carvery on Sunday, September 28, got far more than they bargained for during their Sunday roast, when a massive section of ceiling plummeted into the dining area.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene around 6.45pm, with firefighters, paramedics and police all scrambling to respond. GloucestershireLive understands restaurant bosses were hoping to get the Brockworth branch back up and running later that same day.
Heart-stopping footage that’s been shared thousands of times on Facebook shows chunks of what looks like plasterboard scattered across the floor between diners’ tables, with a gaping hole where the ceiling once was, reports Gloucestershire Live.
The clip, which has racked up more than 90,000 views, shows debris strewn across tables and chairs where punters had been enjoying their meals.
Terrified customers can be seen fleeing the restaurant, whilst a youngster’s distressed cries echo in the background. The child can later be heard weeping “what happened?” as he and his family make their escape from the building.
At one table, four plates of Sunday dinner sit completely untouched as the venue is cleared out. The social media post was captioned: “Toby Carvery Brockworth ceiling just collapsed on us! Stay away!”
One concerned user wrote: “Hope everyone’s ok – what a nightmare.”
Another chimed in: “I hope everyone is okay especially the little one crying!!”
Joey Pass was eating at the Toby Carvery in Brockworth, Gloucester, on Sunday evening, and told the BBC a little girl and a woman were hurt when part of the the ceiling fell down.
Mr Pass, aged 31, from Dursley, was standing outside with one of his children when he “suddenly heard a massive crash”.
“I could see loads of dust and heard a kid scream so I rushed in to see if everyone was OK.”
He added: “First aid was given by a frantic women who was eating there. I felt concerned and worried – what if that happened to my children or my wife?
“My daughter keeps asking about the little girl that the roof fell on.”
The Brockworth branch, situated on the A46 Shurdington Road, underwent a major makeover in 2024, with roughly £500,000 pumped into four months of renovation work.
Mitchells & Butlers, the owners of Toby Carvery, have been approached for a comment.
