EXCLUSIVE: Former Coronation Street star Sherrie Hewson has revealed she’d like to return to the ITV soap as Maureen Webster over 30 years after she made her debut

Sherrie Hewson has revealed she’d like to return to Coronation Street almost two decades after she left the cobbles.

The former Loose Women panellist and Benidorm star played Maureen Webster in the ITV soap from 1993 until 1997 before briefly returning in 2006.

Fans will remember Maureen as the four-times married daughter of Maud Grimes (Elizabeth Bradley) and owner of the corner shop from 1994 until 1997.

Maureen was a divorcee caring for her disabled mother Maud when she gained employment at Bettabuy in 1993, completely unaware that the manager of the store was her old flame, Reg Holdsworth (Ken Morley).

The pair were able to rekindle their relationship and marry despite Maud’s continuing dislike of Reg going back to 1968.

Reg bought the corner shop for them to run together but after six months he returned to the supermarket scene and Maureen soldiered on with Maud’s help.

The slow death of Maureen’s second marriage began when Reg was promoted to Lowestoft in 1995.

Away from Maureen, he reverted to his old ways and impregnated his mistress Yvonne Bannister (Clare Cathcart.).

Maureen divorced him and kept the shop, calling it ‘Maureen’s Mini Market’.

In 1996, she fell for Bill Webster (Peter Armitage) , only to marry Fred Elliott (John Savident) on the rebound after she and Bill split up.

Realising what a mistake she’d made, she ran off to Germany with Bill, marrying him there.

Maureen was last seen in Coronation Street in 2006 when she made a surprise visit for Christmas, catching Bill out as he and Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls) carried out an affair.

The pair were unable to work out their differences and another divorce followed before Maureen headed back to Germany.

Speaking about he potential return to Weatherfield, Sherrie told Reach PLC: “I’d like to go back to Corrie.

“My mate Tony Maudsley from Benidorm is in it, who I speak to most days, but I don’t think I’d be connected to him but I am Sally’s [Webster now Metcalfe’s] ex mother-in-law.

“I married Billy Webster and she was married to Kevin Webster. I’ve got a connection there.”

It comes after Sherrie’s Hollyoaks character Martha Blake was brutally killed off earlier this week in chilling scenes.

Martha’s serial killer son Jez Blake (Jeremy Shefield) turned on her after he “betrayed” him and stabbed her in front of her grandchildren Sienna Blake (Anna Passey) and Dodger Savage (Danny Mac).

Coronation Street is on ITV at 8pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday and available to stream from 7am on ITVX
