Charlie Kirk’s death has been the source of bi-partisan shock and anger, but one councillor in Burnley was met with outrage when she said the commentator had it coming

A councillor has been forced to resign from her position after a post she made about Charlie Kirk went viral. In the post, she openly commented on his assassination, saying that he “brought it on himself”.

Conservative political commentator Charlie Kirk was 31 when he was gunned down at the Utah Valley University on Wednesday (September 10). Since then, police have been scoping the area for evidence and have since retrieved the rifle used to carry out the attack, while new images of a potential suspect have been released.

Kirk, a key ally of Donald Trump, was speaking about transgender mass shootings when he was hit by a single bullet striking him in his neck. Panic soon set in, as crowd of students who gathered to watch him debate hot-button topics began to flee.

In the wake of the assassination, there has been a mass of tributes and messages of support from people both at home and abroad. President Donald Trump gave a touching message for the commentator and insisted he would posthumously bestow Kirk the Presidential Medal for Freedom.

But Fiona Wild, an independent councillor from Burnley, caused outrage when she uploaded her take on the killing. In the social media post, according to the Daily Mail, she explained that the right wing activist had had it coming due to his controversial talking points.

“I don’t condone violence, but I do think he made himself a target and brought this on himself so good riddance to not a very nice man!” Fiona fumed in the post. “America needs to get rid of the other t*t now.”

After posting the status, Fiona’s comments soon began to go viral, as people called for Fiona’s position on the council to be stripped from her. In a statement on Thursday (September 11), Burnley Council confirmed that Fiona had now resigned from her position.

“People may be aware of a social media post made by former independent councillor Fiona Wild; we can confirm that Ms Wild has now resigned from her position,” the statement said. “Ms Wild was serving as an independent councillor at the time of her resignation, and therefore was not affiliated to, or representing, any political party group within Burnley Council.”

Speaking with the newspaper, Tory leader of the council Jamie McGowan described Ms Wild’s comments as “disgusting”. He added: “I think what Cllr Fiona Wild forgets is that two small children have woken up without their daddy this morning, because of nothing more than his political beliefs.”

Fiona had initially joined Burnley Council as a member of the Labour Party, but quit in August. She has since described herself as an ardent “defender of our NHS “, sharing several snaps of herself standing on picket lines together with UNISON workers.

Suspect in Charlie Kirk assassination
It comes as the FBI in Salt Lake City released images of a “person of interest” in relation to the assassination

It comes as investigations in Charlie’s death continue, with the FBI in Salt Lake City releasing the first images of a man they wish to speak to. The man seen in the photo can be seen wearing a black pullover with the American flag and a bald eagle on top of it; he is also wearing tinted sunglasses and a baseball cap.
