Kyle Smith threatened to burn the victim’s “home and car to the ground” in an attempt to destroy her life, even going as far as post “explicit” photos of her on TikTok

An irate dad tormented his ex-mother-in-law by making numerous 1p transfers into her bank account – and using insults as payment references. Kyle Smith, 23, threatened to burn her house and car “to the ground” before bombarding her with profanity-laden payments.

Newcastle Magistrates’ Court was told the references for the payments, each amounting to just 1p, included horrific messages which read “kill yourself”, “narcissist s***”, “control freak” and “bucket f****”.

Smith then posted an “explicit” picture of the victim on Tik Tok, which was seen by one of her family members, prosecutors said. He pleaded guilty to harassment and threatening to damage or destroy property.

Prosecutor Glenda Beck explained that Smith split up from his partner and the mother of his child in mid-2024, Chronicle Live reports. Tensions flared between Smith and his ex-partner’s mother in August of that year, the court heard.

Mrs Beck stated: “She received a Facebook notification and had a message saying ‘Watch it, you control freak, I’m going to blow you and your car up’.

“She didn’t respond but, later the same day, she checked her Instagram and had a message stating ‘Nothing but a control freak. Watch what happens to your car and house, I’m going to burn them to the ground, you s***’.”

The court heard that the victim blocked Smith on all her social media accounts and phone, but he found another way to hurl insults. Mrs Beck revealed: “On January 1 this year, the complainant received a bank transfer for 1p, which had the reference ‘control freak’.

“It was from the defendant’s bank account. She then received another bank transfer from the defendant for 1p with the reference ‘Kill yourself’. She then received another from the defendant for 1p, which had the reference ‘Narcissist s***’.”

The court heard that the woman received an additional 1p bank transfer from Smith, this time labelled “bucket f***”. However, it was the posting of an explicit photograph on TikTok that led the victim to report the matter to the police.

Magistrates were told Smith had no previous convictions and felt his ex-partner’s mother was “over-bearing”, contributing to their split.

Jason Boyd, defending, said: “She did help, initially, in terms of facilitating contact with his child but, when that came to an end, that’s what sparked his behaviour towards her. He is deeply embarrassed and ashamed.

“He had her bank details from transferring her money for bills in the past and used that for contact when she blocked him. He has mental health difficulties and is remorseful.”

Smith was granted conditional bail following the hearing. He is now due to reappear at the same court for sentencing on December 19.
