Phil Tufnell spills all the secrets in his new book and revealed that Darren Gough once asked why he couldn’t get a bacon sandwich – when New Zealand had so many sheep
Daft Darren Gough asked why he couldn’t get a bacon sarnie in New Zealand when they have so much sheep.
His pal Phil Tufnell was with him on a cricket tour Down Under when the Yorkshireman made the gaffe and Tuffers said that Goughy, 55, would be the source of laughter on England trips “whether intentionally or not”. He added: “He reflected in the dressing room once, ‘All these sheep here in New Zealand – and you can’t get a bacon sandwich anywhere’.”
Phil, 59, said he also asked his team-mate why his nickname was ‘the Rhino’ and Darren replied: “Because I’m as strong as an Ox.”
Tuffers continued: “Darren might not have won the Ashes in 2005 but he did win Strictly Come Dancing.
“His quickstep and American smooth were particularly well-received. Not bad for a rhino. Or was it an ox?”
In his new book Tuffers’ Ashes Heroes, the former Question of Sport captain revealed Darren also showed his funny side on the pitch.
He told how he sent up an Aussie rival before a clash at Chester-le-Street after they had spent the night before in at Lumley Castle overlooking the ground.
Phil said: “Dating back 600 years, the ancient structure is said to be haunted by the ghost of Lily of Lumley who apparently has a habit of rising from a well in the castle grounds where she was hurled by two priests in times long distant.
“In 2005, Lily, perhaps seeking advice on how to play a punchy lower order innings, appears to have popped up at the end of Aussie all-rounder Shane Watson’s bed in the early hours, traumatising the Queenslander to the extent that he hotfooted it to fast bowler Brett Lee’s room and spent the rest of the night on his teammate’s floor.
“By the next day, word of the spooky goings-on had clearly reached the England dressing room.
“As Goughy walked past Shane on the way back to his mark, he couldn’t help but deliver the classic arms-in-the-air ‘Whooo-oo!’ ghost impression.
“That was Goughy. He believed cricket should be hard-fought, but he was also insistent on it being fun.”
