Coleen Rooney was once left speechless by a former Manchester United manager who commented on Wayne Rooney’s sperm in a bizarre first interaction

Coleen Rooney was left speechless by former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal in their first-ever interaction.

The Dutchman is fondly remembered as a character for his hilarious comments and antics at Old Trafford rather than his dull as dishwater football, which he oversaw United playing between 2014 and 2016.

Van Gaal is remembered for iconic statements, such as saying he wants his players to be “horny” as a metaphor for being hungry and determined to win matches. And defending Marouane Fellaini’s elbow on Robert Huth after the defender had pulled his hair, arguing such provocation was only acceptable in “sex masochism”.

Behind the scenes, Van Gaal also seemingly came out with outlandish comments. One such time came as he introduced himself to the England legend Rooney’s wife Coleen.

Speaking on the Wayne Rooney Show on BBC Sport, the former United captain recalled his wife’s first conversation with the Dutchman with presenter Kelly Somers.

Rooney said: “The first time we met Coleen we had, like, a lunch and all the players, the players’ wives, girlfriends, all the staff were there.

“And then he come up to Coleen – first ever time he’s met her, and he went to her, “Your children, they look very much like the father.” And she was like, “Yeah.” And he went, “He has very strong sperm!”. That was first time he met her.

“She was like, “Err….” But he was so funny, he was such a good character.”

Somers quipped: “Where does the conversation go from there? “Cool, cheers boss, see you later. See you at training tomorrow…”

Louis van Gaal - FA Cup

To which Rooney agreed, replying with a smile: “Yes, just move on! I really liked him as a person, different and funny but as a coach I learned probably more from him than anyone else.”

Rooney made 79 appearances under Van Gaal, scoring 29 goals and winning the FA Cup, but that was to be the Dutchman’s last match in charge of United.

United’s all-time top goalscorer explained how the usually charismatic manager was not himself during the celebrations of the club’s first trophy in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Rooney said: “I have so much respect for him, I think his wife maybe found out at half-time of the game.

“We won the cup, we had the after party. Louis was stood over with his wife and a couple of friends and he was very quiet, that’s just weren’t him. When you see his character and personality, that just was not him.

“I went up to him and said “boss, whatever is going on just forget it and enjoy tonight” and he couldn’t. It was tough, it was tough for us because we respected him.”
