Eddie Howe is under pressure at Newcastle after a poor start to the season, with the Magpies winning just three of their first 11 Premier League games

It wasn’t too long ago that Eddie Howe appeared untouchable.

However, following a shaky start to the new season – with Newcastle securing only three wins from their first 11 league matches – the prospect of a split between the club and manager now seems far more plausible.

To be fair to the English coach, he’s been dealt a bum hand. Newcastle’s pre-season was heavily disrupted by the drawn-out Alexander Isak saga and the club also missed out on several important transfer targets during that period.

The campaign got off to a decent beginning, with defeats only coming against top sides like Liverpool, Arsenal and Barcelona. But three losses in four recent Premier League fixtures have dropped the Magpies to 14th, casting a long shadow over St James’ Park.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Newcastle’s owners currently have no plans for a managerial change. Still, if poor form continues, that stance could quickly shift. With that in mind, here’s a look at four potential successors who might replace Howe if he’s sacked – or chooses to step aside – mid-season.

Andoni Iraola

Linked with both Manchester United and Chelsea this season, Andoni Iraola is clearly a highly regarded figure. He has done remarkable work at Bournemouth, showing he can overachieve with a squad that lacks the biggest budget – and one that routinely has its best players pinched.

Introducing his attacking, dynamic style to Newcastle could inject new life into their talented roster, while the club’s larger resources and aspirations for European competition could make this an ideal next step for the inventive Spaniard.

Iraola focuses on integrating young talent with high-intensity football – qualities that fit Newcastle’s current squad perfectly. His smooth adaptation to English football makes him an appealing option, but the club may need to move quickly to prevent rival teams from swooping.

Oliver Glasner

Another coach making a strong impression in English football is Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner. Not only did the Austrian secure the Eagles’ first major trophy last season, but he also transformed them into a side that opponents dread facing.

Newcastle’s financial clout could tempt him into taking on a bigger challenge, particularly given his reputation for elevating mid-table sides. That said, Glasner may be eyeing even bigger targets, with Manchester United and Bayern Munich reportedly showing interest.

Having led Eintracht Frankfurt to Europa League triumph in 2022, Glasner brings proven continental experience – exactly the type of background a club with Newcastle’s European ambitions would prize. His teams combine defensive organisation with attacking creativity, a mix that suits a Newcastle side looking to climb back up the table.

Xavi

Hiring Xavi would be a bold gamble – but one with potentially huge rewards. The Spaniard has been out of work since leaving Barcelona at the end of the 2023/24 season, making him the only free agent on this list. His illustrious playing career would also bring immediate star power and glamour to Newcastle – a level of prestige the PIF are likely to value.

However, his limited managerial experience – not just in England, but overall – remains a concern. At their best, his Barcelona team dazzled, winning La Liga in 2022/23. At their worst, they showed concerning defensive frailties.

Xavi’s commitment to possession-based football would represent a sharp shift from Newcastle’s more direct, counter-attacking style under Howe. Yet that very approach could be just what the Magpies need to evolve into a more balanced and entertaining team.

Kieran McKenna

At the start of last season, Kieran McKenna was the centre of attention, having taken Ipswich to the Premier League against the odds after consecutive promotions. But following a disappointing campaign ending in relegation, his shine has dimmed slightly.

Even so, his proven ability to get results with underdog sides could align perfectly with Newcastle’s goals as they try to regain momentum. The club’s financial strength could also complement his analytical, data-driven coaching approach.

McKenna prioritises player development over constant recruitment – a philosophy that could reinvigorate Newcastle’s squad. Additionally, his tactical versatility and motivational skills make him a modern, forward-thinking candidate for the Magpies. It would be a bold appointment – but one with potentially spectacular results.
