The Daily Star is big Down Under and has a big offer for those ageing Aussies – as Steven Finn warns winding us up will only make Stokes more ‘determined’ to smash those old men in the Ashes

The Daily Star today offers a once in a lifetime offer for Australia’s decrepit cricketers – a free Zimmer frame.

We’re proud to be big down under and we’re offering to help the creaky elderly Aussie squad with these walking aides to use during the upcoming Ashes series against a young and vibrant England team.

It comes after concerns the ageing Wallabies would struggle to compete after naming just one player under 30 – 26-year-old all-rounder Cameron Green – in their squad for the series opener in Perth starting on 21 November.

They can be used to get to and from the grounds or to make it easier to walk from the crease to the changing rooms after being bowled out by our boys.

To apply you must be a current member of the Australian cricket team, email news@dailystar.co.uk

It comes as Dumbo Aussies are cooking their own goose by goading Ben Stokes – so says former England hero Steven Finn who also got a blasting at the peak of his career.

He warned poking the bear will only make our legend more “determined” to smash them in the Ashes. Tinpot newspapers down under have been sledging the cricketer, branding him “cocky captain complainer” and saying he’s got “no balls”.

Their front and back pages have been filled with jibes. But fast bowler Finn, who was part of England’s last success Down Under in 2010/11, says winding him up will backfire.

He said: “I think Ben Stokes thrives when he has a point to prove. You know there are players you really don’t want to provoke because it makes them even better and even more determined. He falls into that category.”

Finn recently saw Stokes and says he’s fired up. He added: “I saw him a couple of weeks ago and you could see behind the eyes that he sees the significance of this tour. This leadership won’t be timid or meek.”

The flustered Aussies are taking aim at Stokesy because they only have a team of knackered old cobbers. The average age of the “Saggy Greens” is an ancient 33.

They have also poked fun at Bazball, branding it “cavalier” and “untested in Australia”. But one amused England fan commented on the “classless” piece: “We are living rent-free in Aussie minds already.”

Finn said, despite the rivalry, Australians do respect “people who win”.

Recalling his experiences as a player, he said: “Getting off the plane it was TV cameras in your face, paparazzi outside the hotel, taxi drivers saying ‘you’re useless, you’re going to get hammered’.

“But Australians respect people who win. If you puff your chest out like we did on 2010/11 and push back, it can turn the other way. By the time we’d bowled them out for 98 on Boxing Day, they really turned on Australia and it almost felt like they were supporting us.”

England will begin their battle to regain the urn in Perth in two weeks. It will be the first time the Optus Stadium, opened in December 2017, has hosted an Ashes Test.

The Daily Star says…

The Barely literate Australian press have been having a go at England’s cricketers ahead of the upcoming Ashes. The sorry excuse for a newspaper, the West Australian, branded England captain Ben Stokes “Cocky Captain Complainer” and dubbed his team’s methods as “dopey”.

Well this is rich coming from a publication whose own country’s cricket team is full of past-it has-beens. Well it seems this sort of banter may well backfire for the chippy cobbers down under.

Top England star Steve Finn reckons the abuse will just fire up Stokes even more to dish out a beating to the Australians.

He says today: “I think Ben Stokes thrives when he has a point to prove. You know there are players you really don’t want to provoke because it makes them even better and even more determined.“

We think he’s right. You’ve picked the wrong England side to pick on this time. Our lads couldn’t give a XXXX about your sledging and you will be hit for six in the coming months.
