A football club has spoken out after a ‘freak accident’ which saw two men die after unloading glass panels from a lorry in its car park.
The tragedy took place at the car park of Hitchin Town FC in North Hertfordshire on Saturday, September 6 at around 2pm as they unloaded glass panels from a lorry near the stadium off Fishpond Road, north Hertfordshire.
Despite best efforts of the paramedics were unable to save them. The pair were pronounced dead at the scene while a third man was also treated for minor injuries. Yesterday police remained at the scene, a police van, tape and two ambulance back boards could be seen close to a Martello Transport lorry at land adjacent to Hitchin Town FC overflow car park.

A Hertfordshire Police spokesperson said: “Police attended an incident in the Hitchin Town Football Club car park at approximately 2pm on Saturday 6 September, following reports that two men were seriously injured.
“The men, who were unloading glass panels from a lorry parked in the overflow car park, were injured in the process.
“Two men sadly died at the scene. Their next of kins have been informed and are being supported by officers. A third man sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The incident is currently under investigation and enquiries continue.”
The lorry, with a named numberplate in the windscreen reading ‘Antonio’, is also still parked at the site three days on. Construction material including wooden planks can also be seen near by close to a police van and car.
Part of the overflow car park, owned by the club, is believed to be rented with plans to turn it into a padel board court and one local said it was a ‘freak accident’.
Mark Burke, from Hitchin Town FC, said: “This is a very sad and tragic accident that resulted in the fatality of two people. We would like to wish our condolences to the families. Unfortunately this did happen on our land although none of our volunteers were involved. The police are leading the investigation.”
Hitchin Town FC released a statement on September 9: “Unfortunately, there was a tragic accident on land adjacent to the football ground on Saturday that resulted in the fatality of two people.
“At this stage, we know very little about the actual details of the accident, and the police have taken control of the incident and their enquiries are ongoing.”
