The suspect arrested in connection with the shooting of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk has been named as 22 year old Tyler Robinson, who was turned in by his father
Tyler Robinson, the man who allegedly killed Charlie Kirk, spoke about retrieving a rifle from a drop point, left a rifle in a bush and used a scope on an app called Discord. He also hinted at a video game reference on one of the bullets found near the gun he allegedly used for the shooting.
Robinson, 22, was arrested last night (September 11) after his father “turned him in” to authorities. It comes after Charlie Kirk, the right wing firebrand, was shot and killed at a rally in Utah on September 10. Speaking at a press conference earlier today, Utah’s governor – Spencer Cox – told reporters how Robinson’s roommate had revealed Discord messages sent by Tyler discussing the weapon allegedly used in the murder.
The roommate told officers Robinson discussed the engravings used on the bullets, which included the phrases: “If you’re reading this, you’re gay lmao” and “hey fascist! Catch this!” This was a reference the popular video game called Helldivers 2.
The messages on the app also discussed Robinson’s movements after the alleged killing as well as detailing how Robinson wrapped the rifle in a towel and stashed it in a bush.
Authorities also alleged Robinson said on the app he used a scope on the rifle and changed outfits.
Robinson was seized two days after Kirk, a 31 year old father of two, Trump supporter and co-founder of youth group Turning Point USA, was gunned down at a Utah Valley University debate in what officials have termed a political killing.
Reports suggest that Robinson’s own father, thought to be a former police officer, handed him in. The arrest announcement came from US President Donald Trump on Fox News, who declared that authorities possess a “high degree of certainty” that the young man in custody is the alleged gunman.
The President disclosed that “someone very close” to the suspect helped secure his capture, suggesting it was the suspect’s own father who delivered him to police.
Trump revealed that a “person of faith, a minister” contacted the suspect’s father. He then detailed how the “father convinced the son” and escorted him to a US Marshal, reports the Mirror.
Trump explained that the suspect’s father told his son they’ve “got to go in”, adding: “They drove into the police headquarters, and he’s there now.”
Trump also noted that he was unsure whether the suspect belonged to a broader network, whilst withholding the individual’s identity. Robinson, who was born in 2003, was detained on Thursday evening in St. George near Zion National Park, approximately 250 miles from the campus where Kirk was gunned down, according to local reports.
Sources have disclosed that Robinson was enrolled at Utah Valley University.
The suspect’s father, Matt Robinson, is reportedly an experienced officer with 27 years under his belt at the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, according to MailOnline. His mother, Amber Robinson, is understood to have been employed as a care worker.
