The Women’s Super League returns with a mouth-watering opening fixture as Chelsea take on Manchester City today.

The champions are fresh off a sixth straight WSL title, and are set to strengthen their squad further with the expected signing of Alyssa Thompson from Angel City for a fee that Standard Sport understands to be just under £1million.

Sonia Bompastor’s side have been busy in the transfer window, signing the likes of Ellie Carpenter, Livia Peng, Becky Spencer and Mara Alber this summer.

They are slightly hampered in the frontline, however, with Sam Kerr still recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament tear, while Mayra Ramirez is on the comeback trail from hamstring surgery. Lauren James picked up another knock at the European Championships.

City, meanwhile, have Andree Jeglertz at the helm, and they raided neighbours Manchester United for midfielder Grace Clinton on deadline day.

Jess Park did move the other way, however, in what has been a hectic 24 hours for the club, who are keen to build on last term’s fourth-placed finish.

They don’t have European football this season, and that could give them the perfect foundation to really be contenders in the league.
