The Super Eagles continue their quest to qualify for the 2026 World Cup today, facing South Africa at Bloemfontein’s Free State Stadium.

Their hosts sit top of the pile in qualifying group C, but Nigeria could pile on the pressure with a win today.

They currently trail South Africa by six points, a deficit which could be halved with a win. Pending results elsewhere, a point could be enough to shift Nigeria into second place, usurping Benin, who are just one point up the road.

Both Nigeria and South Africa won in their previous outings in this September international break, the Super Eagles edging past Rwanda while Bafana Bafana cruised to a 3-0 defeat of Lesotho, with Mohau Nkota, Lyle Foster, and Oswin Appollis.

South Africa, then, come into the match high on confidence, while Nigeria will be fighting something of an uphill battle. They will be without star striker Victor Osimhen, who is fast closing in on Rashidi Yekini’s position as the country’s top scorer.

The Galatasaray goalscorer was withdrawn from the Rwanda match with a calf injury and has not travelled with the squad to Bloemfontein. Tolu Arokodare, newly of Wolverhampton Wanderers, will likely deputise.
