HSBC has overtaken AstraZeneca to scoop the title of Britain’s most valuable listed company.

The bank had a market capitalisation of £177.6billion last night, with shares up more than 55 per cent over the past year.

That put it ahead of Astra, where the shares have been broadly flat over that period, giving it a value of £175.2billion.

The drugs giant became Britain’s first £200billion company last year, but the stock has drifted lower since, while HSBC is hovering around record highs.

Shell is third-largest company with a value of £151.4billion, while Unilever is fourth at £111.7billion.

Rolls-Royce is closing on the £100billion mark – the engine-maker was valued at £97billion.
