I’m A Celebrity star Martin Kemp was diagnosed with two brain tumours in the 1990s

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star Martin Kemp opened up about his brain tumour battle on Wednesday’s episode.

The Spandau Ballet legend, 64, was diagnosed with two brain tumours in the 1990s when he was just 34.

During a medical examination in the 90s, an MRI scan revealed two significant brain tumours. The larger one was surgically removed and the second was eradicated using cutting-edge radiotherapy.

Despite the success of these procedures, Martin still endures ongoing side effects, revealing to his campmates on Wednesday’s episode that he has since developed dyslexia following the operations.

During a conversation about reading, Martin said: “I’m dyslexic, when I read all the ends of the words jumble around.”

Explaining what caused it, he said: “Mine is from an operation, taking away a brain tumour” as he told his fellow campmates he had two brain tumours removed in 1995.

Martin then recalled that while making a show in Canada, he was playing a professor and went in to make-up to put on a bald cap and as they pulled it on he described: “I could hear the whole of the make up wagon go quiet because you could see this lump on the back of my head.”

The former EastEnders star went on to explain that the tumour had started to grow into the bone, and two days later he had to have an operation.

He said: “They zapped me with stereotactic radiation.”

Talking about the impact of the brain tumours and the operations, he admitted: “For a while I lost everything, I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t see, I was a train wreck afterwards.”

Martin added that although he is now recovered, he has been left with dyslexia.

It comes as the singer previously spoke about his brain tumours on his joint podcast FFS, My Dad Is Martin Kemp, with his son Roman Kemp.

He shared: “When I was 34 and I went through that brain tumour stuff, I was practically resigned to the fact that I was going to die, but I was quite happy with my lot.”

In a poignant reflection, he added: “Every year that I live, every month that I’m alive is like a bonus.”

I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! airs nightly at 9pm on ITV1, STV, ITVX & STV Player.
