Department store John Lewis dropped it’s annual Christmas advert on November 4 and the festive trailer featuring an iconic 90s dance track has left fans divided

John Lewis has released it’s annual Christmas advert which centres around a dad and son who bond over a 90s dance record.

The department store dropped its festive trailer on Tuesday (November 4), telling shoppers: “If you can’t find the words, find the gift.”

It opens on Christmas Day with a father tidying away discarded wrapping paper when he finds a leftover present meant for him.

Inside is a vinyl record of 1990s dance track Where Love Lives by Alison Limerick.

He heads straight to his record player and as soon as the needle drops, he’s transported to a nightclub from his youth.

In a room of full of ravers, the man spots his shy teenage son looking out for him across the crowd.

Memories come flooding back of seeing his son take his first steps as a toddler and grinning up at him as his baby.

The scene then suddenly shifts back to the present day with the headphone-wearing son catching his dad enjoying his gift.

The teen looks on, slightly embarrassed, until his Dad pulls him in for a hug. They share a quiet moment with music helping them express the unsaid.

The advert has left fans divided with some branding it “nonsense” and others saying John Lewis have “won this year’s Christmas advert” competition.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan penned: “The John Lewis Christmas Advert is TERRIBLE!!! What a bunch of nonsense. Unimaginative, unfestive, rubbish. Bring back Moz the Monster or Edgar the Dragon!! #JohnLewisChristmasAdvert #JohnLewis #Rubbish.”

Another added: “What an absolute turkey load of rubbish. #JohnLewis tv advert.”

However, Someone said: “AT LAST! A decent Christmas Ad from #JohnLewis Straight forward and poignant. No smugness from the execs. Still not as good as the Asda one from about 10 years back, but it’s good.”

A fourth social media agreed: “#JohnLewis have won this year’s Christmas advert already ,also using one of my favourite house tracks of all time.”

John Lewis has become renowned for its Christmas adverts over the last 18 years, featuring cover versions of songs by famous artists such as The Verve, Oasis and Elton John.

This year artist and producer Labrinth has remimagined Alison’s club anthem, with the store releasing a vinyl single featuring both versions, with proceeds going to a charity for people who have grown up in care.

Last year’s “gifting hour” ad featured a woman searching for the perfect gift for her sister, while reliving memories of their lives.

Previous festive John Lewis ads have featured a girl who sees a man on the moon through her telescope and a ‘venus flytrap’ Christmas tree who befriends a young boy.

The latest festive trailer is the first time the department store has focused on a father son relationship for its Christmas advert.
