New Leeds United summer signing Sean Longstaff has been praised as one of the summer’s best deals following his first start for the club.

Injuries to captain Ethan Ampadu and Japan international Ao Tanaka opened the door for Longstaff’s first Premier League start of the campaign, which ironically came against his former club Newcastle United.

Longstaff delivered a commanding midfield display against his boyhood club, helping Leeds secure a valuable point as their strong home form continued after defeating Everton in their opening game.

Four points from three matches, two against Champions League sides, marks an encouraging beginning to Daniel Farke’s campaign.

With transfer deadline day approaching and the Whites still seeking attacking reinforcements, ex-Liverpool and Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy reckons they’ve already completed what could be their shrewdest piece of business, particularly from a value perspective.

Murphy said whilst analysing Leeds’ performance for Match of the Day. “Longstaff is going to be one of the bargains of the summer. I think it was around £12m, rising to £15m.

“He was terrific for a couple of seasons at Newcastle and deserves all the plaudits. I thought he was outstanding.”

After patiently waiting for his opportunity in the initial weeks, Longstaff has certainly seized it, easing worries about Leeds’ midfield options with Ampadu sidelined.

The Whites will now aim to inject more flair into their attack, especially as the rest of the squad has demonstrated in at least two home games that they can hold their own against opponents.

Meanwhile, Longstaff’s former club face a busy final hours of the transfer window.

Newcastle are attempting to hold onto striker Alexander Isak as he looks to force a move to Liverpool. The Magpies could return with another bid for Brentford striker Yoane Wissa on deadline day.
