Oasis star Liam Gallagher was among the mourners at Manchester Cathedral on Friday morning to pay his respects to boxing legend Ricky Hatton, who died last month aged 46
Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher was amongst the celebrity mourners who gathered to honour boxer Ricky Hatton at his funeral in Manchester — but brother Noel was nowhere to be seen.
The rock legend made his way to Manchester Cathedral on Friday morning (October 10), offering his own touching farewell to Ricky.
Clad entirely in black, he was accompanied by his partner Debbie Gwyther and family members, alongside Stone Roses icon Mani, as they came to pay their respects to the boxing great who passed away last month at his Hyde home aged 46.
In a deeply moving moment during the service, the Oasis anthem Live Forever echoed through the cathedral.
Liam was accompanied by fellow Manchester music legends Shaun Ryder and Bez, comedian Paddy McGuinness, cricketer Freddie Flintoff, nightclub mogul Wayne Lineker and boxing champions Tyson Fury, Antony Crolla, Amir Khan, Fraser Clark, Frank Bruno, Barry McGuigan and Tony Bellew at the ceremony, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Manchester City icons also turned out to bid a final farewell to the Blues-obsessed Ricky, whose coffin was adorned in sky blue with “Blue Moon” emblazoned on the side.
Among them were Mike Summerbee and Gary Owen, whilst Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney was present with wife Coleen.
As the service concluded, Liam delivered his own heartfelt gesture, blowing a kiss towards the Blue Moon coffin as it prepared to carry Ricky on his final voyage to his cherished Etihad Stadium.
Following Ricky’s passing, Liam took to social media to share his own devastated tribute to his boxer mate. In his heartfelt message on X, he wrote: “Absolutely devastated to hear the news about RICKY HATTON it was an absolute honour to know him and carry his belts RIP CHAMP LIVE FOREVER LG x”.
Oasis delivered their own moving tribute to Ricky Hatton during their Wembley performances last month.
During what marked their first UK show following the Manchester boxing legend’s passing, the group honoured his memory by displaying a massive image of Ricky on screen whilst performing their legendary anthem Live Forever.
Following the touching moment, Wembley Stadium’s official social media account posted a picture of the tribute, captioned simply ‘For Ricky’ alongside a blue heart emoji.
The boxing champion was a devoted Oasis supporter and close mate of the Gallagher siblings, memorably escorting his championship belts to the ring ahead of his victory against Pauli Malignaggi at Las Vegas’s MGM Grand in 2008.
Ricky had been present at their Heaton Park concert and one of their Dublin gigs mere weeks before his passing, expressing gratitude to Noel for the tickets afterwards.
In comments made last month, Noel disclosed that he’d been exchanging messages with Ricky just seven days prior to his death.
“We were texting each other last week,” he revealed on Talksport. “And I saw him at Heaton Park a couple of the nights, and he was on standard Ricky form. He was wisecracking with everyone, he was having a drink, he was great.
“We don’t know what has happened, but he did struggle with mental health, that’s widely known, and it just shows you that you never really know. It’s such a shame. He’s a great Mancunian.”
Noel fondly remembered Ricky as a ‘lovely, lovely lad. “One of the lads. He was one of us,” he expressed.
“It’s sad we’ll never see him at the Etihad again, but that’s life isn’t it,” he added poignantly.
