Liverpool manager Arne Slot faces mounting pressure after nine losses in 12 games, with debate raging about his future and potential replacements emerging

Liverpool find themselves in turmoil following nine defeats in their last 12 outings with manager Arne Slot under huge scrutiny.

Although the Dutchman guided the Reds to Premier League glory in May, he now faces mounting pressure. While Slot achieved a remarkable feat in his debut campaign after succeeding Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s squad has clearly fallen well short of expectations this term.

Having splashed out more than £400million on fresh talent, he now faces mounting pressure. Although certain segments of the Liverpool support are demanding Slot’s dismissal, Daily Star Sport understands Liverpool are not contemplating an immediate parting of ways with their manager.

Here’s all the latest news from Anfield.

Carragher slams “sackable offence”

Jamie Carragher declared that Slot deserves the boot for persistently picking Ibrahima Konate in a furious outburst.

The French defender has faced criticism for his displays this campaign, reports the Mirror.

Konate found himself in the firing line yet again following a series of blunders in their 4-1 Champions League battering on Wednesday. Slot subsequently withdrew Konate during the second period.

Working as a pundit for CBS Sports, Carragher lost his temper as he tore into multiple Liverpool players. “Oh f****** hell, Gakpo,” he exclaimed about Liverpool’s Dutch winger before turning his fury on Konate, who bore the brunt of criticism for PSV’s third goal.

“Oh my God, Konate. Oh my God, Konate. Watch Konate, here. Oh my God. I’ve f****** had enough of them, honest to God, that Konate.”

The furious Liverpool legend was then spotted making a phone call and unleashing on Slot, adding: “I mean, that’s a sackable offence for the manager, he keeps picking him. He should be sacked for that. Have they scored again, 4-1. What’s this, 9 [defeats] in 12?”

Though he demanded Slot’s dismissal in a fit of anger, Carragher has maintained that the Reds manager warrants additional time.

“Liverpool is not a sacking club,” Carragher declared on CBS. “Liverpool are different from almost every club in European football where the manager is the king. They get time. Liverpool have never sacked a manager who won the league. Never, in their history – after a few years, they’ve gone and resigned.”

Klopp’s praise for Zidane resurfaces

While Slot has been compelled to field questions regarding his position, the challenge of securing a replacement, should the Dutchman receive his marching orders, would represent an enormous task for Liverpool.

Nevertheless, former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is one coach who has remained unemployed since departing Los Blancos in 2021 and might prove a perfect fit. He was even previously lavished with praise by former Reds chief Klopp.

Even though Zidane possesses an outstanding record, having secured three Champions League crowns and two La Liga trophies, there was frequently a suggestion that the Frenchman thrived at Los Blancos because he could handle the egos in his star-studded team, rather than possessing tactical brilliance.

However, this wasn’t a sentiment that Klopp endorsed. The ex-Liverpool manager lauded Zidane’s coaching prowess before the 2018 Champions League final, which Madrid subsequently claimed 3-1.

“If a lot of people think Zinedine Zidane has not a lot of tactical knowledge and then people think the same about me that would be really funny,” Klopp said.

“The two managers in the Champions League final have no clue about tactics? What would that say about the game?

“For me, Zinedine Zidane is one of the best five players of all time in football. I’m longer in Liverpool than he is at Real Madrid and he can win the Champions League for a third time. That’s never happened before.

“Unfortunately I have to accept that he is as brilliant as he was as a player. This group of players work like a clock from Switzerland. I saw his team playing a lot of times and it is just fantastic football.

“It is organised when it needs to be organised and chaos when it needs to be chaos.”

Nevertheless, Zidane has shown little interest in returning to management and is reportedly holding out for the France national team role, with Didier Deschamps expected to depart following this summer’s World Cup.

However, this doesn’t imply that Zidane would turn down an offer from Liverpool.

Back in 2022, when quizzed about the possibility of managing a Premier League club, Zidane told L’Equipe: “Never say never. Especially when you are a coach today. If I go back to a club, it is to win. I say this with all modesty.”
