The 2022 World Cup winner headed in the decisive goal just past the hour mark, connecting with an excellent cross from Dominik Szoboszlai.
Throughout the match, Liverpool piled on the pressure, dominating the Spanish titans from beginning to end. However, Real remained in contention thanks to a series of remarkable saves by Thibaut Courtois.
Despite some fans booing Trent Alexander-Arnold on his return to Anfield, the Reds ultimately secured the win.

Ibrahima Konate, 7 – Appeared uncertain at times against some of the world’s top attackers, but held his ground as the Reds demonstrated why Anfield is such a formidable venue to visit.
Virgil van Dijk, 8 – Used every bit of his experience to positively influence the match. It’s rare for Real’s attackers to be kept at bay for a full 90 minutes.
He nearly broke the deadlock at the other end as well.
Andy Robertson, 8 – Chosen over Milos Kerkez for the left-back position, he demonstrated his quality as Liverpool’s defence appeared cohesive and sturdy. Still brimming with energy, he should be a regular in the starting line-up.
Ryan Gravenberch, 8 – Shifted over to Liverpool’s right to assist Conor Bradley against Vinicius Junior, effectively neutralising the Brazilian’s threat. As the game progressed, he increasingly dominated the midfield battle.
Alexis Mac Allister, 7 – Had an opportunity to put Liverpool in the lead 10 minutes into the match after being spotted by Szoboszlai but sent his shot high over the bar. Then unleashed a powerful strike just before half-time.
Eventually put his side ahead with his first goal of the season.
Mohamed Salah, 6 – Scored over the weekend following a slow start to the season. However, he struggled to find space against Real and lacked creativity.
Should have scored late in the game and didn’t have nearly the impact he had last season.
Dominik Szoboszlai, 10 – Delivered another stellar performance in a Liverpool jersey, controlling the match from beginning to end. Forced two exceptional saves from Courtois before half-time and provided the assist for Mac Allister’s goal.
Created opportunities, worked tirelessly and inspired his team-mates. A future captain in the making.
Florian Wirtz, 8 – He was full of energy, constantly trying to make things happen in the final third. He was a constant threat and is sure to be a hit at Anfield once he gets used to the Premier League.
Hugo Ekitike, 9 – In the absence of Alexander Isak, he led the line once again. He took a heavy knock from Dean Huijsen just before half-time and was later denied by Courtois.
A superb striker who held the ball up well and became increasingly threatening as the game went on. He’ll be aiming to notch up plenty of goals this season.

Curtis Jones, 6 – He replaced Alexis Mac Allister late in the game as Liverpool tried to secure the win.
Cody Gakpo, 6 – Unlucky not to start, he only got 11 minutes on the pitch. He nearly added a second goal towards the end.
Federico Chiesa, 6 – He came on for Florian Wirtz in the dying moments.
Milos Kerkez, 6 – He was subbed on for Andy Robertson but will find it hard to reclaim his starting spot.
