Liverpool Women’s Super League clash with Tottenham was stopped for more than 10 minutes after Mia Enderby suffered a suspected neck injury and was taken to hospital
Liverpool women’s star Mia Enderby was taken to hospital for treatment with a suspected neck injury following an incident during their defeat to Tottenham.
Play was stopped for over ten minutes when Reds forward Enderby seemed to fall awkwardly on her neck whilst challenging for an aerial ball and, following extensive medical attention, was stretchered off the pitch. The extended delay led to 22 minutes of added time at the end of the match.
The 20-year-old had featured in every one of Liverpool’s six Women’s Super League fixtures this campaign and was in the starting XI against Spurs. Post-match, manager Gareth Taylor revealed he hadn’t yet consulted with the club’s medical team, describing the injury as “not nice to see”.
He continued: “Hopefully she is OK. At one point I thought she was going to re-enter in terms of getting back up and start to play again but with those types of injuries it’s really crucial we take care of them.”
Tottenham managed to overturn the deficit and secure victory through strikes from Toko Koga and Bethany England. Liverpool had initially gone ahead via Beata Olsson’s opening goal.
Enderby signed a new two-year contract during the summer, having made 42 appearances and scored six goals across her initial two campaigns with the club.
This compounds Liverpool’s fitness concerns as they’re already missing Marie Hobinger and Sophie Roman Haug, both sidelined with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) problems sustained prior to the international break.
Taylor lamented the team’s predicament, stating: “We didn’t have anything from the sidelines today unfortunately. It’s not ideal when you have to play a 21-year-old Hannah Silcock up on the right side. We just have to battle through it.
“The message is clear. We’re working so hard as staff, players and everyone at the club to turn this into a better situation. But it takes a bit of time and a bit of support. Unfortunately, as we’ve seen at the moment, we’re getting knocked a bit – but we’ll keep fighting.”
The Reds’ manager concedes he doesn’t anticipate leading the WSL, but hopes for more progress over a longer period.
He added: “We don’t expect to be top of the league, we’re realistic and we know we’re at the start of a really, really long project. But, of course, you want to see some positive moments and I think we’ve seen glimpses. It’s just we’re not able to sustain it for long enough in a game of 90 minutes.”
