The Reds were beaten in the final of this competition last season by Newcastle, from whom they have since poached Alexander Isak.

Isak could be in line for his second start in a Liverpool shirt, with Arne Slot promising to ring the changes from last weekend’s Merseyside derby win.

Southampton have endured a difficult return to the Championship and have made a slow start to the season under new boss Will Still, with just one win from their opening six league matches.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Liverpool vs Southampton is scheduled for an 8pm BST kick-off today, Tuesday September 23, 2025.

The match will take place at Anfield, in Liverpool.

Liverpool vs Southampton team news

Arne Slot is expected to ring the changes for the Carabao Cup tie, though Alexander Isak is likely to make just his second Liverpool start following a big-money summer transfer from Newcastle.

The striker is still building up his match fitness after missing the whole of pre-season and the first three games of the campaign.

Fellow summer arrival Giovanni Leoni is in line to make his debut, potentially partnering Joe Gomez in central defence. Georgi Mamardashvili is also set for his first start in place of Alisson Becker.
