Teenage darts sensation Mitchell Lawrie has become the youngest player to break Luke Littler’s record following a stunning win just four days after he turned 15
Mitchell Lawrie has made history by becoming the youngest player to clinch three senior men’s titles, shattering Luke Littler’s previous record.
The Scottish teen darts prodigy triumphed at the WDF Irish Classic in Killarney on Saturday night, a mere four days after celebrating his 15th birthday. He beat Ronan McDonagh in the final, throwing four 180s and averaging 98.60 in a commanding 5-1 victory.
Just an hour before this impressive feat, Mitchell bagged the Irish Classic Youths title with a 4-1 win against Kaya Basal, boasting an average of 90.95. The young star’s father, Fraser, and grandfather, Dougie, were among the spectators at the INEC Arena in Kerry, Ireland, cheering him on as he secured yet another title.
Littler was 15 years, five months and four days old when he accomplished this feat, meaning Mitchell smashed his record by a full five months. The young Scot is set to compete in both the men’s and youth WDF World Championships at the Lakeside later this month.
Meanwhile, the reigning PDC World Champion will be gearing up to defend his title at Alexandra Palace. Lawrie, who previously won the British Open and Welsh Open earlier this year, has ample time to prepare for a potential face-off against his predecessor.
However, he won’t be eligible to go head-to-head with Littler in PDC competitions until he turns 16. Lawrie’s family have been thoroughly enjoying the teen’s journey.
In a chat with The Sun, his grandfather played down comparisons to Littler. “Mitchell is a great kid and we are so proud of him,” said Dougie.
“But we don’t want him to be the next Luke Littler, we just want him to be our Mitchell.
“Him and Luke are great friends and have played each other a lot over the years. Luke is now a superstar, but we just want Mitchell to be happy playing darts.”
Dougie revealed he was the one who introduced Mitchell to the sport.
He explained: “I’ve played darts all my life, and I’ve had Mitchell playing from when he was a very young boy. I always taught him to play with aggression, even from when he was little.
“I make no apologies for that as it has turned him into a great player.”
