Manchester United have confirmed their goalkeeper for the Premier League clash against Manchester City, with Ruben Amorim’s decision enraging some fans

Manchester United fans have been left fuming after Ruben Amorim confirmed he’ll play goalkeeper Altay Bayindir in Sunday’s derby clash against Manchester City.

United brought in young goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day, with many fans hoping he could solve their problems between the sticks. Bayindir’s howler against Arsenal saw United lose their opening Premier League fixture of the season and he made another big error in the Red Devils’ 3-2 win over Burnley before the international break.

Meanwhile, fellow calamity keeper Andre Onana – whose wretched performance in the Carabao Cup defeat against Grimsby Town may be his last act in a United shirt – has finally left Old Trafford, as this week he joined Trabzonspor on a season-long loan deal.

But Amorim has suggested 23-year-old Lammens is viewed as a future prospect, with Bayindir keeping his spot after featuring in the opening three Premier League matches of the campaign, reports the Manchester Evening News.

“We are really pleased,” Amorim said regarding the Lammens acquisition. “He is a goalkeeper with a lot of potential, I know we are in a moment where the goalkeeper needs to be really strong and have a lot of experience.

“But also in the moment we have to look at the present but with a focus on the future, it’s a little bit of both. A guy with great potential, one more option to play and he will be ready.

“Sometimes you as a club, you try to see different options, sometimes you are able to do one option or another, we have an option that can give us different things in the moment but also has the potential to be our goalkeeper for a lot of years. That was our choice in the end.

“Altay is going to continue (in goal) because it’s a different league, a different country, different trainings, different ball, so we will try to maintain that.

“They will fight for the position. For this game, it is clear Altay will start.”

Reacting to the decision, one United fan posted on X: “This coach is not serious. You chase the players and you bench them on arrival.

“You are simply saying they are not good enough. Amorim will be gone by Christmas. Altay is not good enough as our main goalkeeper.”

A second fan said: “This is the problem with Amorim — he hesitates to trust new signings and lets their confidence sink!” A third posted: “Watching Bayindir start for my club every week will make Onana looks competent.”

Another commented: “I can understand to a certain extent about not throwing Lammens in but if it’s going to Bayindir for most of the season they have massively messed up. If that was the case an experienced goalie should’ve been bought.”

However, other fans disagreed, with one saying: “You can’t just expose your new signing to a match like Man City how about if things go wrong the pressure will be too much on the player.”

And another said: “Throwing in a young GK into the Manchester derby away would be an idiotic decision. We all agree Bayindir is not good enough but we bought Lammens for the long term and we need integrate him gradually.

“Throwing him in against in the derby away where he could make a costly mistake would make him lose confidence much faster.”

Amorim said he believed it was in everyone’s best interests that Onana departed on loan. He said: “Not just us as a club but also Andre, I think we understood this needed a change.

“Sometimes it’s hard to point why. It’s the performance, it’s the moment, the bad luck in some moments was hard on him, was hard on us.

“Our thinking is to have a change in the goalkeepers but I wish the best for Andre Onana. He was really good on working, trying to help the players, but sometimes you can have all the quality in the world but you need to change the environment to return to your level. That was a feeling for us and for Andre.”

Matheus Cunha, Mason Mount and Diogo Dalot are all ruled out through injury. Cunha was substituted during the first half of the 3-2 victory over Burnley a fortnight ago, while Mount was withdrawn at the interval.

Dalot pulled out of Portugal’s World Cup qualifying fixtures against Armenia and Hungary.
