If this man had never forked out the £35 for an Apple AirTag, he’d have lost his suitcase forever – and never gotten to the bottom of this bizarre disappearance

A man used his AirTag to track down his missing suitcase after it was stolen on a plane to Los Angeles, and was stunned by what the culprits he discovered were brazenly wearing.

Apple AirTags are penny-sized smart gadgets that can be tucked into almost anything, allowing you to track their whereabouts on your iPhone. You view a live location on a map, and when you’re within range of the AirTag, you can also trigger an alarm or use precision finding to pinpoint it.

Costing around £35, they can be a lifesaver for tracking down items far more expensive than the price of just a few pints. Popular choices to slip them into are cars, handbags, purses, TV remotes, keys or bicycles.

Daniel Scott, who had flown from Salt Lake City, put it in his suitcase. He waited by the luggage carousels to no avail, so decided to check his iPhone and saw that his luggage was moving towards a car park and leaving the airport.

Daniels partner phoned the police and told them the location. They arrived at an abandoned building half a mile away and searched the place.

Shockingly, the people inside the building were wearing Daniel’s clothes and shoes.

The police detained several of them and gave Daniel the chance to search for his belongings, which were scattered across multiple rooms. The majority, he estimates 90% were recovered.

There have been similar stories. A woman who asked an airline to deliver her suitcase tracked it with an Apple AirTag – and discovered her baggage went to McDonald’s before being ‘held hostage’ at a block of flats.

An Australian couple were also left “frightened” after mysteriously finding an AirTag hidden in their bag in Indonesia after someone slipped it into their backpack at the airport.
