Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, bassist for the Stone Roses, has died at the age of 63 just weeks after he was seen at Ricky Hatton’s funeral in what would be his last public appearance

Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield made his final public appearance at Ricky Hatton’s funeral just weeks before his own death.

The Stone Roses bassist, who died on 20 November aged 63, was amongst the many mourners who gathered to pay their respects to the world champion fighter at Manchester Cathedral on 10 October. The musician was spotted sporting a khaki green coat, brown hat and red-tinted spectacles during the service.

He joined a host of other celebrities at the ceremony including heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, football icon Wayne Rooney and Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher. This was the final public appearance Mani made before his death just over a month later.

The musician’s death follows the tragic loss of his wife Imelda, who died of cancer in 2023, reports the Mirror.

Mani’s brother broke the gut-wrenching news of his death on Facebook with a post that read: “IT IS WITH THE HEAVIEST OF HEARTS THAT I HAVE TO ANNOUNCE THE SAD PASSING OF MY BROTHER GARY MANI MOUNFIELD. RIP RKID.” The Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown also paid tribute on X/Twitter: “REST IN PEACE MANI X.”

Echo and the Bunnymen’s lead singer Ian McCulloch also shared his devastation: “I’m absolutely gutted to hear the news about Mani, who I have always loved and always will love, deeply and forever. Like a brother. I am in shock to be honest. Please tell me I’m just having a bad, bad dream. My thoughts and feelings and Manilove to all of his family from me.”

In one of his last interviews just last month, it emerged that Mani was “itching to get back” into the music scene. Speaking in mid-October, The Stone Roses star revealed he’d recently visited his storage unit to look at his bass guitars and was inspired to take up music once more.

Just weeks before his death he confessed: “I’m in a great space at the moment. Itching to get back bro. I’m ready to get back. Johnny Marr’s always trying to get me to do stuff.”

“Liam [Gallagher] was always trying to get me involved with stuff before the Oasis thing. I’m feeling now that I could pick up again, you know? I’ve been in the lock up [storage unit] having a look at stuff and weeding out my collection.”
