Flats above a popular city café were evacuated after a fire broke out in the restaurant kitchen. Fire crews rushed to the Hummus Bar in Golders Green Road, north west London on Monday evening.
Around 15 firefighters were called out to tackle the blaze, which saw about 10 people from the flats above moved for their own safety. London Fire Brigade said the alarm was raised at 5.26pm. Part of the ground floor kitchen was damaged by fire, the brigade said.
Crews from three different stations had the fire under control just over an hour later. A spokesman said: “Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters tackled a fire at a restaurant on Golders Green Road, NW11.
“Part of a ground-floor kitchen was damaged by fire. Around 10 people were evacuated from flats above the restaurant as a precaution. There were no reports of any injuries.
The Brigade was called at 1726 and the fire was under control by 1832. Fire crews from West Hampstead, Willesden and Finchley fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
The Hummus Bar is a popular Kosher restaurant with two locations within North West London, one in Golders Green and one in Hendon. It opened in 2016 and boasts fresh hummus served with a modern twist.
Its website says it serves up “fresh, vibrant, and mouth-watering dishes that transport you straight to the bustling streets of Tel Aviv.” Its signature dishes include creamy hummus and a Jaffa Burger.
The short rib Shawarma served on a beef burger patty with chilli, garlic aioli, sauerkraut, red and caramelised onions will set punters back a budget-friendly £16.
The restaurant has a 4.5 star average rating on Google, from more than 1,000 reviews. A recent one reads: “This is not a fine dining place but heart warming for those who like this kind of food.”
Another read: “Some of the best food I’ve had in my life. Fantastic short rib marinated for 48 hours and smoked for 2 hours. Probably the best I’ve had. Fantastic desserts, prepared to perfection.
“Beautiful, well made hummus which goes amazingly well with their pita bread. Really soft and succulent chicken, cooked to perfection. Highly recommended for everyone. Give yourself this reward.”
The restaurant could not be reached for comment on Monday evening.
