The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across 64 areas of the UK, with residents urged to take precautions and check items around their homes
The Met Office has issued a stark warning to residents in 64 areas across the UK, urging them to secure items around their homes ahead of a yellow weather alert.
This cautionary advice comes as certain regions prepare for heavy downpours, lightning strikes, and blustery winds that could pose significant threats to both properties and personal safety.
The thunderstorm warning is set to be in effect from 2am until 5pm on Thursday, coinciding with a band of severe showers and thunderstorms sweeping across the country.
According to the Met Office, these conditions could lead to localised flooding, spray on roads, and sudden flash floods, resulting in treacherous driving conditions and potential road closures.
In areas where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there may be delays and cancellations to train and bus services, while power cuts and service disruptions could impact some households and businesses.
There’s also a risk that homes and buildings could sustain damage due to floodwater, hailstones, strong winds, or lightning strikes. To mitigate these risks, the Met Office recommends those in vulnerable areas take steps to protect their property and ensure people’s safety.
Residents are strongly advised to secure movable objects and temporary structures before the stormy conditions hit. The seven items specifically mentioned include bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences, reports the Mirror.
Taking these precautions early can help prevent damage and reduce the risk of injury.
The Met Office warning advises: “Prepare to protect your property and people from injury. Before gusty winds arrive, check to ensure moveable objects or temporary structures are well secured. Items include; bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences.
“People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.
“If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding a safe enclosed shelter (such as a car). Do not shelter under or near trees, or other structures which may be struck by lightning. If you are on an elevated area move to lower ground.”
Areas predicted to be hit include Nottingham, Derby, Durham, Lancashire, Manchester, Yorkshire, Cardiff, Swansea, and Gloucestershire.
A separate weather chart by WXCharts reveals a substantial band of rain sweeping across the UK, with London, Belfast and parts of Scotland also appearing destined for downpours on Thursday.
