Some Morrisons stores will close completely while others will bid farewell to the in-store pharmacy, cafe, or florist counter

Morrisons customers could find themselves without their neighbourhood shop before the year is out, as the supermarket giant has announced major closures. It comes just after the retailer championed in the Good Food Christmas Food taste test.

Despite ranking among Britain’s top retail chains, Morrisons is set to shut down 103 locations, encompassing shops, cafés, florists, and chemists. The widespread closures are part of a strategy to enhance the shopping experience in areas where customers “really value” the service.

In March, chief executive Rami Baitieh said: “Morrisons Cafes are rightly famous for their great quality, well-priced food, their place in the local community and their appealing mix of traditional favourites alongside exciting new dishes. In most locations, the Morrisons Cafe has a bright future, but a minority have specific local challenges, and in those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space is the only sensible option.”

The retailer plans to axe over 50 cafés, 13 florists, four pharmacies, and all 18 Market Kitchens in the months ahead.

In 2021, Morrisons operated 497 supermarkets across England, Wales, Scotland, and one store in Gibraltar. At that point, the business had 110,000 employees on its payroll and catered to roughly 11 million customers weekly, according to the Express.

The retailer launched its Market Street initiative in 2009, designed to incorporate specialist, artisan-style sections—including butchers, bakers, fishmongers, and florists—within Morrisons outlets. But by 2023, Morrisons started scaling back these operations, with further reductions implemented in 2025.

Particular communities are bearing the brunt of these changes far more severely than others, suffering a devastating double hit to their neighbourhood services. Two areas in particular, Blackburn (Railway Road) and London (Wood Green), will witness the closure of both their in-store Cafe and Pharmacy facilities.

Meanwhile, the Stirchley branch in the West Midlands faces the axing of both its Cafe and Florist services.

Bradford emerges as the city experiencing the most extensive cuts, with three different Morrisons locations earmarked for complete closure across all three services: Cafe, Florist, and Pharmacy operations.

The chief executive commented: “Although these changes are relatively small in the context of the overall scale of the Morrisons business, we do not take lightly the disruption and uncertainty they will cause to some of our colleagues. We will of course take particular care to look after all of them well through the coming changes.”
