Rod, 80, and his wife Penny, 54, are making their own bee-juice from eight hives in the 18-acre grounds of their 10-bed Hertfordshire mansion

Rod Stewart makes his own honey – from 320,000 bees living in the grounds of his mansion.

The veteran rocker famously sings ‘I love ya honey’ in 1977 hit Hot Legs. And he released a song called Honey Gold in 2018.

Now Rod, 80, and his wife Penny, 54, are making their own bee-juice from eight hives in the 18-acre grounds of their 10-bed Hertfordshire mansion.

Penny said at first the couple kept their honey to themselves. But their bees make so much they now give it away to family and friends.

The mum-of-two said the couple got the hives – which each house 40,000 bees – so they could produce their own honey as she likes a dollop in her lemon tea every morning.

Penny said: “With our mature fruit trees, other native plants and surrounding farmers’ land our garden is the perfect home for bees. We have eight hives plus a shed for extracting and storing honey.”

She said such is the volume produced by their army of bees the couple find they have to give it away.

Penny said a honey treat topped off her perfect morning. She said: “Our bedroom overlooks beautiful mature oak and beech trees and a topiary area.

“I press the button on our automatic blinds and the view gently seeps in. Rod and I sit up in bed for 10 minutes, gaze out and natter over a cuppa.

“Rod enjoys English breakfast tea and I have hot water with lemon juice, which is good for digestion and fighting inflammation, plus a teaspoon of homemade honey.”

Penny recently said that she knows when her rocker husband is sick as illness makes his famous spiky hair go floppy. The Sailing singer has sported a perky trademark barnet throughout his decades-long career.

Penny said: “Man-flu aside – usually feigned for the purpose of some attention – Rod doesn’t do self-pity, although there are one or two telltale signs when Rod is truly sick and not just bluffing. His hair flops like two sad curtains on either side of a middle parting – it’s as if his trademark bouffant throws in the towel, too, and needs some recuperation time.”
