As temperatures plummet and Brits crank up their heating, one expert has shared a simple trick that could save you hundreds of pounds on your energy bills every year

Heating costs are causing major headaches for countless households across Britain at the moment. With temperatures having dropped dramatically and the cold creeping into our homes, many are growing anxious about the financial impact of firing up their boilers and heating systems, reports the Express.

Staying warm indoors is absolutely crucial for health reasons, but achieving this comfort doesn’t have to break the bank. There are actually numerous simple and straightforward methods to slash your energy costs and boost your home’s efficiency.

One particularly effective approach involves adjusting a single dial on your boiler – a move that could potentially save you hundreds of pounds each year.

The specialists at HeatGeek shared their expertise on YouTube, demonstrating how this swift adjustment could deliver substantial long-term savings, requiring mere moments to complete. In a brief video that has attracted thousands of viewers, the professional highlighted the ‘one thing’ that Britons can implement immediately to cut costs is reducing the flow temperature setting on their boiler.

He explained: “If you have a modern boiler – that’s any boiler under 20 years old – look for the little radiator symbol, and there should be a dial there. These are often set up to 70 or 80 degrees, which is very inefficient for a modern boiler.”

Simply taking a moment to adjust the setting down to 60 degrees can yield significant results, despite appearing minimal. The specialist continued: “That will save you up to £200 a year. On top of that, prolong the life of your boiler.”

The flow temperature switch on your boiler dictates just how scorching the water gets before it makes its journey to your radiators, the Energy Saving Trust explained.

They explained: “As it flows through the radiators, the water cools before it returns to the boiler. The temperature of the water at this point is the return temperature.

“Reducing the flow temperature also lowers the return temperature. Boilers are more efficient when the return temperature is low, and this can save you both energy and money.”

Nevertheless, the specialists suggested carrying out one swift job before you tinker with your heating setup. They reckon it’s wise to snap a photo or jot down your current settings, just in case you need to revert back.

Dialling it down excessively could prove risky for pensioners or those battling health issues, so be sure to keep tabs on how things pan out and tweak accordingly if needed.
