The girl had fallen asleep in the school’s infirmary after feeling ill – and was terrified when she woke to find herself in a dark and deserted school that had closed for the weekend

It’s the stuff of nightmares for a child – being trapped in school, all alone while friends are off enjoying themselves. This nightmare became a terrifying reality for one 11-year-old girl, who woke in the school’s infirmary to find herself locked in with staff and pupils having gone home for the weekend.

The girl’s ordeal began when she was sent to the infirmary at around 11am last Friday, after telling staff she had a headache and felt sick. After an hour or so the girl went to lunch, but still felt unwell so returned to the infirmary, where she fell asleep.

But there was no nurse on duty that day at the Isaac-de-Razilly school in Saint-Jean-de-Sauves in France, according to La Nouvelle République via Le Parisien – and it appears that staff forgot the girl was in the infirmary.

When she woke up at 7pm – hours after school had closed for the weekend – she was said to be understandably panicked, as the school was in darkness and completely deserted.

It must have felt like a traumatic dream, but with nightlights on in the school hallway she was able to find her way to the lockers to retrieve her phone and make a tearful phone call to her mum.

The girl had been due to visit a friend’s house after school, so until that moment her mum didn’t realise her daughter was missing – and after a call to police she hurried to the school.

After the principal was contacted, a member of staff who lived nearby to the school was alerted and was able to free the girl.

The furious mum told Le Parisien: “I don’t even understand why no one told me my daughter was sick.”

The school’s principal was said to have contacted the family to check on the girl’s condition, and has offered to meet her parents on Monday.

Earlier this year, a young student was trapped in her primary school in Manchester for hours after lessons ended, and had to ring 999 to escape at 9pm.

The girl, who had unknowingly dozed off out of sight of staff, was eventually freed by firefighters through a loo window. The Year 6 pupil, thought to be 11 years old, was unharmed during the incident.

According to the Manchester Evening News, she found a secluded spot within the building post-school and fell asleep. It’s believed she located a landline phone within the school and rang the police more than five hours later.

She was released 20 minutes afterwards when the fire service, alerted by the police, dispatched a fire engine to the location, reported the Manchester Evening News.
