Aanchal Mamidwar was determined to marry her boyfriend, Saksham Tate, despite his death – now she says she wants her relatives ‘hanged’ for allegedly killing him
An Indian teenager has “married” her murdered boyfriend’s corpse after he was allegedly slain in an honour killing. Aanchal Mamidwar performed symbolic rituals on the body of Saksham Tate and declared “they cannot separate us anymore.”
The pair had been together for three years and had been making plans to marry, despite their families reportedly strongly opposing due to Tate being Buddhist and Mamidwar, Hindu. Speaking to reporters, the 21-year-old from Maharashtra’s Nanded district, alleged: “My father kept telling me to end the relationship because he was a Buddhist.
“He even offered to let me marry any other man of my choice, but not Saksham. They killed him brutally, but they lost. My lover won, even in death. I want my father and brothers to be hanged.”
Tate, 25 was allegedly shot and bludgeoned to death. According to News18, Aanchal’s father, Ganesh (also referred to as Gajanan) Mamidwar, had recently learnt of her daughter’s relationship and strongly opposed it due to caste differences.
He her two brothers and two others allegedly shot Saksham in Nanded’s Juna Ganj area before crushing him with stones, killing him on the spot. News agency PTI, citing police officials, reported that the confrontation began on the evening of November 27, when Tate was standing with friends.
Sources said Tate was recently released from jail, and Aanchal claimed that her family had been plotting to kill him for weeks. They were threatening him continuously. As soon as he came out of jail, they decided to finish him. They murdered him like an animal,” she alleged.
Eyewitnesses at the funeral said Aanchal reportedly broke down and applied haldi and kumkum as part of symbolic wedding rites, as well as applying turmeric and vermilion to her partner’s body.
According to Times of India, she has severed all ties with her family and will live permanently with Saksham’s mother. Following Saksham’s death, the police have charged six individuals.
They have been charged under sections related to murder, unlawful assembly, rioting, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which is the new criminal code of India, the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Arms Act.
