The 1970s was one of the most exciting and creative decades of all time, according to two thirds of adults – but what made it so special? Read the full list now.
For two thirds of adults, the 70s was one of the most thrilling and inventive decades ever. Now, the top 70 highlights of the 70s have been unveiled.
A survey of 2,000 adults paid tribute to the era of flares, funk and feathered hairdos. The top three were made up of Queen, who transitioned from newcomers to decade dominators, Fawlty Towers which aired from 1975-1979, with Abba clinching the number one spot.
The decade saw the rise of cassette tapes, polaroid cameras and lava lamps as household staples, while TV hits like The Two Ronnies, Dad’s Army and Charlie’s Angels graced our screens – the latter is set to make a comeback on TV channel Legend, which commissioned the study.
A spokesperson for Legend, said: “The research shows how fondly the nation feels about the 70s. Whether you lived through it or not, there’s no way your life hasn’t been shaped in some way by what came out during those 10 years.
“Some of the biggest cultural properties of the modern age – like Star Wars – first appeared in the 1970s, and it’s amazing to think about what life must have been like when it was brand new.”
Fashion trends such as flares and tie-dye clothing, along with the roller disco craze, were other cherished memories from the era.
The iconic 1972 film The Godfather was picked by one in ten as a favourite relic from the period.
At least 16 per cent of those who weren’t born in the decade feel they missed out. If given the chance to time travel, most would love to experience the music scene of the time.
Furthermore, four in 10 believe that camaraderie and community spirit were stronger back in the 70s compared to now, with 26 per cent expressing the same sentiment about nightlife and club culture.
Over one in 10 still engage with 70s music daily, and 24 per cent regularly watch telly shows from the era.
The spokesperson for the channel added: “There’s something comforting about the aesthetic of the 70s. “Pop culture from the 70s also left a lasting mark, from cult films to iconic TV shows, the characters and stories of that era continue to resonate.
“We know our shows bring nostalgia for many of our viewers, they want to turn back the clock and shows like Charlie’s Angels offer them this comforting escapism.”
