With the UK recording on average around 400 UFO sightings each year, new data has now revealed the best place to spot them, as a quaint Welsh town tops the list
When it comes to UFO sightings, most high profile reports tend to come from America, but it appears it’s not just our friends across the ocean that have the monopoly on extraterrestrial visitors, as each year the UK records around 400 or so sightings – with one town clocking up more sightings than anywhere else in the UK.
According to new research compiled from three accredited sources over the last decade: the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC), the Enigma Labs app, and the UFO Identified Group – one location in particular, once adjusted for population size, means you are far more likely to spot a UFO than any other location in the country.
Sharing the details online, Nation.Cymru explained that with just under 20,000 residents, Llandudno in North Wales has logged 23 sightings, with the majority coming from Enigma reports. This means that based on population size, it tops the list for the place you are statistically most likely to spot an unidentified flying object.
The city of Norwich in East Anglia comes in second, with a more consistent number of reports across all databases, something which suggests a well established UFO community who are keen to report their unexpected sightings.
The third highest location is Manchester, which actually logged the most number of sightings overall with 349 reports, however with a population considerably larger than both Norwich and Llandudno, this brings the overall average of sightings down.
According to the data the following cities reported the highest number of UFO sightings across the UK.
- Llandudno, Wales – 116.7 reports per 100,000 residents
- Norwich, England – 89.3
- Manchester, UK – 88.2
- Stafford, England – 76.7
- Waterlooville, England – 71.9
- Exeter, England – 62.7
- Preston, England – 60.2
- Leominster, England – 58.5
- Leeds, England – 54.7
- Southampton, England – 51.3
So what does this actually mean?
Although Llandudno only logged 23 sightings in total, the smaller population size of the town at just 20,000 residents means that once adjusted to a ratio of 100,000, there would be a whopping 116.7 reports.
The same method of working out the number of sightings per 100,000 people is also the reason that some locations such as Leeds and Manchester that have a high base number of sightings, are actually lower down the scale due to the size of their population.
Interestingly, no single location type appears to attract all sightings, with the Top 10 locations spanning both England and Wales, with an diffuse spread that includes both rural and metropolitan areas, both in land and in coastal locales.
Although sightings are largely subjective and could easily be influenced by factors such as population density and reporting habits, the rankings do reflect reported sightings rather than definitive evidence of UFO activity.
