Wrexham is a hit tourist destination for rich Americans. Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds’ TV show about buying the struggling football club has sparked a huge boost in American “set-jetter” visitors.
Experts say the Welcome to Wrexham series has got on the “set-jet” tourist trend – where travellers are inspired by somewhere they have seen on TV.
And since Deadpool star Reynolds and co-chairman Rob McElhenney took over Wrexham AFC the town’s coffers have swelled. Official figures show since it first aired tourism revenue into the north Wales city is up 20% year on year and almost 50% in five years.
It comes as more than five million people watched the show about saving his Wrexham football team. That’s more than 100 times the entire population of the Welsh city which stands at around 60,000.
The takeover by Reynolds and comedy pal Rob, along with the series, has helped boost the club to unprecedented levels of support across the globe.
Fans have come from as far away as Brazil to watch matches unfold at the STok Cae Ras football stadium. Internet searches regarding trips to North Wales have also boomed after the club’s meteoric rise through the divisions.
Last month more than 300,000 people in the US alone searched for Wrexham content on internet site Reddit. Tourism chiefs have used one Reddit review of a trip to Wrexham as an advert during the latest season of the Disney+ show.
The review, by David Weber and wife Allison from Arizona, said: “I don’t say this lightly, but watching a match at The Turf was the experience of a lifetime.
“Wrexham has earned our support for life and I hope to return in the future. When friends are travelling to the UK, it will be the first place I recommend they add to their itinerary.”
The series has been renewed for a fifth season.
