Never spend your loose change without checking the coins first – as they could actually be a lot more valuable than they appear at first glance. Here’s one to look out for
Never spend this rare 20p coin – as it is a lot more valuable than it appears to be at first glance. In fact, you’ll make “easy money” if you have one in your possession.
An expert called @CoinCollectingWizard took to TikTok to talk about the lucrative silver piece. Speaking with his 30,900 followers, he said: “Easy £50 if you have this 20p… Considered by many as the ‘holy grail’ of change collecting, the undated 20p is undoubtably at the top of most serious collectors’ wish list.”
Back in 2008, an unknown number of these 20p coins were released with a big error. There is no date on either the obverse or reverse side, which is something that really intrigues collectors.
It is believed around 136million 20p coins were minted that month, with about 250,000 featuring this unique error.
The Royal Mint confirmed this was the first time in three centuries that an error of this kind occurred, so you’ll have to look hard to find one of the anomalies.
The video added: “This makes it extremely sought-after by collectors. They also confirmed that while exact quantities are unknown, no more than 250,000 of these undated coins made it into circulation.
“You should always check the sold listings on secondary market sites to see how much collectors are actually willing to pay for a coin.”
How to spot a rare coin
Finding a coin with a date error isn’t the only way to make bags of money – you should also look out for the following signs:
1. Mint marks: Coins from certain mints (like the Carson City “CC” mint) can be rarer. Mint marks are usually small letters on the coin indicating where it was made.
2. Double strikes: Coins that have been struck more than once by the die are unusual and therefore pretty sought-after.
3. Misprints or die cracks: Oddities in the design, such as missing letters, numbers, or doubled images, can catch collectors’ attention.
4. Coins with significant dates: Historical periods or discontinued series may be more valuable.
If you think you have a rare coin, consult a reputable coin dealer, numismatist, or submit it to a professional grading service for authentication.
