But the largest single transaction in the group’s Oxford Street store in London can now be a second-hand handbag – which sells for a five-figure sum.
A customer last week paid £12,000 for a blue ‘pre-loved’ Hermes Birkin bag.

Danielle Gagola of John Lewis Partnership, which owns the store, said: ‘The £12,000 Hermes Birkin was the most expensive handbag sold in John Lewis history.
‘Customers are coming to us for something truly special: Authentic, one-of-a-kind pieces with a story, sold by a brand they trust.’
A section of the ground floor accessories department of the Oxford Street store also offers ‘pre-loved’ bags from Celine, Chanel, Chloe, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Valentino.
